MEI is an extra Social Security contribution that funds the state pension reserve. In 2026 it is 0.90% of your contribution base, paid in full by the self-employed. It rises 0.1 points a year to 1.2% in 2029 and buys you no additional pension rights.

There are social security calculators out there, but I don't think there's one that is quite detailed. You can adjust contributions and see what you would really be getting, as well as an estimate of your pension, even though I imagine the rules around that might change before most of you enter pension age. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you!
